Scenes of Grant Park taken from elevated positions on the
west side of Michigan Avenue. They clearly show sailing and steam vessels both
inside and outside of the breakwater; the Illinois Central tracks, trains and
station; several boat concessions for trips to Lincoln Park and to the upcoming
Columbia Exposition in Jackson Park; and industrial use toward the mouth of the
river; 7 prints, ca. 1890

Side of Chicago, photos show the concrete steps and granite boulder seawalls
partly under construction. In some pictures there appears to be a park,
possibly Lincoln Park, in the background. Sequence numbers include: 121-5, 127,
and 207-8; 8 prints, ca. 1890

Photographs of river traffic, starting outside the mouth
of the river and proceeding inland. Includes lowered and raised bridges, adults
and children standing on the banks, steam and sailing craft, and numerous
warehouses with identifiable business names painted on them. Sequence numbers
include: 139-41, 143, 207-8, 301-6, and 309-12; 19 prints, ca. 1890

At an unidentified portion of (probably) the Illinois and
Michigan Canal, dredging and construction work. There is a rudimentary spillway
across the river, and the workers seem to be constructing a lock. There appears
to be a workers’ camp nearby and a town in the distance. Sequence numbers
include; 186-193, and 196-8; 13 prints, ca. 1890

Downtown Chicago - rotating bridge in the open and closed
positions. Other scenes are farther out in the country and involve the building
of a stationary bridge over a narrow canal. Sequence numbers include: 313-6,
319-21, 325-7; 11 prints, ca. 1890
