History of Field Enterprises (including the Chicago Daily News, the Sun & Times Company, the Chicago Sun-Times, and Field Communications)

Chicago media conglomorate founded by Marshall Field III. The company was dissolved in 1984.

Field Enterprises, Inc. was incorporated on August 9, 1944, and initially consisted of the Chicago Sun newspaper, founded by Marshall Field III in 1942. In December 1945 the company acquired the Quarrie Corporation, publisher of World Book Encyclopedia and Childcraft. In 1948 Quarrie was merged into Field Enterprises and operated as Educational Corporation.

In 1947 Field Enterprises bought the Daily Times, a popular evening tabloid. Both papers published daily out of the Times' building at 211 W. Wacker Dr., the Sun in the morning and the Times in the afternoon, but less than a year later combined to form the morning newspaper the Chicago Sun-Times. Daily Times sportswriter Irv Kupcinet debuted "Kup's Column" in 1948 for the new Sun-Times. The popular column, which chronicled Chicago nightlife and gossip, would remain a fixture in the Sun-Times until Kupcinet's death in 2003. During the next 10 years, Field Enterprises expanded into a major media company with the acquision of radio stations in Chicago, Cincinnati, Seattle, and Portland, publishing companies Simon & Schuster, Pocket Books, and Parade Publications, and the background music businesses Air Music and Functional Music.

Marshall Field III died in 1956, and Field Enterprises experienced a period of considerable expansion under Marshall Field IV. Educational Corporation's World Book instituted a science service which provided newspapers with information on NASA and American astronauts. Field's Newspaper Publisher's Syndicate offered services to newspapers in the United States, Canada and Europe, including advice columnist Ann Landers, Milt Caniff's comic Steve Canyon, and political cartoonist Bill Mauldin. The Sun-Times had begun construction on a new, modern building at 401 N. Wabash St. on the Chicago River, and the newspaper moved operations there with much fanfare in 1957. In 1959 Field Enterprises acquired the Chicago Daily News, an evening paper with a long and celebrated history in Chicago. Founded by Melville Stone in 1875, then bought by Victor Lawson in 1876, the Chicago Daily News maintained a consistently influential position in the Chicago newspaper market. The Daily News' Foreign Service was founded in 1898 to cover the Spanish-American war, and was the forerunner of the modern worldwide wire services. The paper won numerous Pulitzer Prizes over the years, and foreign correspondents including Edward Price Bell, Paul Scott Mowrer, George Weller, and Keyes Beech elevated its reputation with their dispatches from around the world. In 1961 the Daily News moved from its building at 400 W. Madison St. into the Sun-Times building at 401 N. Wabash, and the two papers shared equipment and resources but continued to publish separately. During the Field years, the Daily News carried on under the leadership of executive Larry Fanning, who worked with editor Herman Kogan to develop the sophisticated arts and politics supplement Panorama.

In the late 1950s Field Enterprises also bought Paper Flotation, Inc., and the Manistique Paper Company to supply the growing newspaper empire. By 1966 Field Enterprises had expanded into television with the acquision of WFLD-TV, followed by other stations in Boston, San Francisco, Detroit and Philadelphia. The company had also acquired several radio stations including KOIN, WJJD, and WFMF, and these along with WFLD-TV made up much of the Field Communications branch of Field Enterprises.

Marshall Field IV died in 1965, and Field Enterprises assets were split between his sons Marshall Field V and Frederick Woodruff (Ted) Field. Having no prior newspaper experience, Marshall Field V apprenticed in every department of the newspaper division and in 1969 ascended to publisher of the Sun-Times and Daily News. The 1970s saw an increase in popularity for the Sun-Times under editor James Hoge, who recruited film critic Roger Ebert, emphasized lifestyle stories and established a tradition of tough investigative reporting. Concurrently, the Chicago Daily News was experiencing a decline. Though the paper featured popular columnist Mike Royko and pioneering female foreign correspondent Georgie Anne Geyer, circulation for the afternoon paper dropped steadily due to the rise of television and a loss of readership from relocated suburban residents. In 1977 the paper unveiled a new design in an attempt to attract younger readers, but the Daily News finally folded after ninety-one years in 1978.

In 1982, Field Enterprises co-owner Ted Field, who did not reside in Chicago and felt disconnected from the company, decided to concentrate his resources on business interests in the entertainment industry. Under the terms of Marshall IV's will, the brothers could either buy each other out or force a liquidation of the company. Marshall Field V declined to buy his brother out, and the dismantling of Field Enterprises began with the sale of WFLD-TV, followed by the other television stations. In an unpopular decision, the Chicago Sun-Times was sold to Australian businessman Rupert Murdoch's News Corp in 1984. The paper's style changed abruptly, and its tone became more sensational and its politics more Republican. Many longtime employees, among them columnist Mike Royko and editorial writer Lois Wille, both former Daily News employees who stayed on at the Sun-Times, defected to the rival Chicago Tribune. Murdoch later sold the Sun-Times to Hollinger International, which was renamed the Sun-Times Media Company in 2006, after a scandal involving Hollinger board member Conrad Black.

Scope and Content of the Collection

The collection is primarily the work of longtime Field employee Herman Kogan, who in the capacity of Field Enterprises Corporate Historian salvaged much of the material. The collection is not a complete record of the companies and newspapers that were owned by Field Enterprises, but rather a patchwork of materials that Kogan found relevant and interesting.

The collection includes administrative, promotional, and legal materials, correspondence, photographs, and artifacts from the Chicago Daily News, the Sun and Times Company, the Chicago Sun-Times, Field Communications, and other miscellaneous holdings owned by Field Enterprises. The collection contains correspondence from the Field Enterprises executive branch, including Marshall Field III, Marshall Field IV, and Marshall Field V, as well as Milburn (Pete) Akers, Emmett Dedmon, Larry Fanning, Larry Sizer, and Walter Strong. Correspondence from various Chicago Daily News and Chicago Sun Times employees is also present, including Keyes Beech, Jacob Burck, Milt Caniff, John Drury, Georgie Anne Geyer, Smith Hempstone, James Hoge, Herman Kogan, Irv Kupcinet, Ann Landers, Baker Marsh, Paul Scott Mowrer, Richard Scott Mowrer, Lou Pryor, Sterling Quinlan, Mike Royko, Nick Shuman, George Weller, and Lois Wille.

Due to preservation concerns, audio materials are not available for patron use at this time.

Narrative descriptions of the subject matter, types of material, and arrangement of each series are available through the Organization section of the finding aid.

    Sub-Series 3: Foreign Service, 1940-1977

Contains some administrative matierals, correspondence with foreign correspondents working at the Daily News during the 1970s, and the files of Baker Marsh, who was the foreign editor during the 1950s and 1960s. Marsh's files are labeled and arranged as he had them originally, by subject. They contain memos, clippings, dispatches, and correspondence with Basil Walters, Keyes Beech, Smith Hempstone, Georgie Anne Geyer and others reporting from their various locations. Of note are letters from Keyes Beech from Asia in the years leading up to the Vietnam War, and Georgie Anne Geyer who was one of the first women to cover South America. Some material pre-dates the Chicago Daily News and seems to be carried over from Marsh's predecessor at the Chicago Times. Other foreign-service related materials can be found in Sub-Series 1.
Arranged by correspondent, followed by general materials, and then the Baker Marsh Files, which only go up to "M" alphabetically.

    Series 2: Sun & Times Company, 1917-1979

Business and historical documents of the Sun and Times Company, covering the Daily Times and the origins of the Chicago Sun. Started by Samuel Emory Thomason in 1929, the Daily Times grew out of Thomason's purchase of the conservative Chicago Journal in 1928. Thomason sold the Journal's name and circulation to the Chicago Daily News but retained the paper's building and resources for his new venture. Edited by Richard J. Finnegan, and modeled after the New York Daily News, the Daily Times became a successful tabloid known as "Chicago's Picture Newspaper." Marshall Field III started the Chicago Sun in December of 1942 as a political counterpoint to Colonel Robert R. McCormick's Republican-focused Chicago Tribune. In 1947, Field merged the Sun with theDaily Times to create the Sun and Times company, publishing both papers daily: the Sun in the morning and the Times in the afternoon, and in one combined issue on Sundays. Less than a year later, the Sun absorbed the Times to become the Chicago Sun-Times company, publishing one daily paper.
Materials include business and legal documents pertaining to the merger of the Daily Times and Chicago Sun, information regarding issues with newspaper carriers and newsstands in the 1930s and 1940s, and documents related to a lawsuit against the Associated Press by Marshall Field III. The series also includes much historical material for both papers, including publicity, promotional materials, and past issues.

    Series 3: Chicago Sun-Times, 1934-1984

Series contains the files of Milburn P. Akers, longtime editor of the Sun-Times, which cover the years from 1949 through his retirement in 1965; the files of Emmett Dedmon, vice-president and editorial director of the Sun-Times and Daily News; and miscellaneous administrative and historical materials.
Organized in the following subseries: Milburn P. Akers Files, Emmett Dedmon Files, Miscellaneous.

    Sub-Series 1: Milburn P. Akers Files, 1934-1970

Milburn P. Akers was first hired by Marshall Field III when Field founded the Chicago Sun in 1941. He was named managing editor of the Chicago Sun-Times in 1949, later executive editor, and finally editor in 1959, a position he held until his retirement in 1965. He was known as a perfectionist, a taskmaster, and a crusader against corruption. His files contain internal correspondence with Sun-Times columnists and reporters, administrative files, and subject files. Altogether they give valuable insight into the personality of the editor, and the inner workings of a newspaper from the writing and proofing to typeset and layout.
Arranged alphabetically by subject and maintaining Akers' originial folder titles. A small amount of biographical materials follows the main alphabetic sequence.

    Series 4: Newspaper Division, 1943-1980

Papers pertaining to the era when the Chicago Daily News and Chicago Sun-Times were owned by the Field Enterprises corporation. Marshall Field IV had inherited the Sun-Times from his father, Marshall Field III and purchased the Chicago Daily News in 1959. These became the primary holdings under the Newspaper Division of Field's media empire.
Organized in the following subseries: Lawrence S. Fanning Files, Larry Sizer Files, Famous Authors, and Miscellaneous.

    Sub-Series 1: Lawrence S. Fanning Files, 1951-1967

Lawrence S. Fanning was executive editor at the Chicago Sun-Times and later editor at the Chicago Daily News during the 1960s. Files contain correspondence with reporters and foreign correspondents, clippings, and other materials and reflect the personal connection he had with his staff, and his devotion to the Daily News. Much of the material deals with Fanning's controversial departure from the paper after the death of Marshall Field IV. Personal files contain biographical information and correspondence with family members and friends. After leaving Field Enterprises, Fanning married Katherine Woodruff, the former wife of Marshall Field and moved to Alaska where they worked together at the Anchorage Daily News. He died tragically of a heart attack at his desk at the paper in 1971.
Arranged alphabetically by subject and in keeping with Fanning's original order and folder titles. Following the initial run of office files is a group of personal files.

    Sub-Series 2: Larry Sizer Files, 1943-1969

There is much information regarding the general operations of the Chicago Daily News and the Chicago Sun Times througout the 1950s-1960s, mostly through memo correspondence between Sizer and Marshall Field IV, former Chicago Daily News editor Tom Collins, and former Vice President of Field Enterprises Wilbur C. Sub-Series 3: Famous Authors, 1969-1972

Famous Authors was a literary series developed for the Sun-Times in the early 1970s. The series was syndicated in over 100 newspapers around the country, and featured well-known authors writing on a non-fiction subject of their choice accompanied by original artwork. Many of the contributors were friends or associates of primary editor Herman Kogan. Author files consist of correspondence, manuscript drafts, and in many cases artwork mock-ups.

    Sub-Series 2: Sun & Times Company, 1933-1948

Photographs from the Daily Times and the Chicago Sun dating from before the two papers combined. Daily Times photos depict people, buildings and newspaper operations, including the use of homing pigeons. Of particular interest are the Nazis in the U.S. series, used to accompany an exposé of Nazi (German American Bund) groups in the United States by Times reporters masquerading as American Nazis.
Chicago Sun items include negatives of staff members and Jack Lambert's political cartoons.
