Chicago art teacher and photographer.
Born in 1867, the son of Junius R. Sloan, a self-taught, locally
prominent Midwest landscape painter, Percy Sloan spent much of his life as an
art teacher and supervisor of art in the Chicago Public Schools. After his
retirement in 1926, he became a private art teacher and art collector. Shortly
before his death he donated his collection of paintings and an endowment to
maintain it to Valparaiso University.
Percy H. Sloan, who never married, died in Chicago in 1950.
Return to the Table of Contents
The collection of late nineteenth and early twentieth century
photographs of Chicago and some neighboring towns, most of which presumably
were taken by Sloan, consists of shots of churches, houses, schools, libraries,
civic and commercial buildings, monuments and statuary. Most of this material
is undated. Also includes a group of aerial views of the city and some suburban
land, taken between 1925 and 1930 by the Chicago Aerial Survey Co. Sloan’s
checklists of his work indicate he was particularly interested in Chicago
churches and in various architectural styles, and includes an inventory of
negatives sold to the Art Institute.
