Scope and Content of the Collection

Research files, photographs, and secondary materials related to work done by Prairie School and Chicago School architects in the Midwest. Includes timelines of work, research on buildings along with genealogy and career information for individual architects. The collection focuses on architects Lawrence Buck, Henry L. Ottenheimer and his firm Ottenheimer, Stern & Reichert, Rudolph Schindler, Robert Seyfarth, and Robert C. Spencer, Jr. and his firm Spencer & Powers. Also includes information about Blanche Ostertag, who worked with several of the Prairie School architects, and a paint sample pamphlet from a company in Wausau, Wisconsin.

Biography of Donald Aucutt

Architectural historian and writer.

Donald Michael Aucutt is an architectural researcher with a primary focus on Chicago architect George W. Maher. Born in Tomah, Wisconsin, Aucutt grew up in South Dakota, graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and did graduate work at the University of Oregon in Eugene. He is the editor and publisher of the magazine Prairie: Popular and Progressive American and World Architecture, 1880-1940 (Newberry Library call number: folio NA712.5.P73 P73).
