Scope and Contents note

Letterpress books labeled “Copies of Important Letters, Papers, and Memoranda.” These contain memos pertaining to labor issues, decisions within the relief department, Interstate Commerce laws, rate fixing, lobbying against government regulation, the strike of 1888, and the “free silver” debate. A long memo dated April 17, 1890 describes train rides on several different lines comparing cleanliness of cars, smoothness of travel, and various amenities available.
