Scope and Contents note

T. J. Potter began his career in railroads in 1865 on a survey west of Ottumwa organized by the chief engineer of the Burlington & Missouri in Iowa. He was then hired as station agent at Albia when the road opened in 1866. He rose to become vice-president of the CB&Q and was a part of C. E. Perkins trusted inner circle of executives. He was also respected by railroad labor groups, and played an important role in negotiations leading up to the 1888 strike. He resigned from the CB&Q in 1887 to take the position of vice-president of the Union Pacific.
