Biographical/Historical note
George Chalender was the master mechanic at the B&M RR in Iowa from 1856-1872. In this position, he held expertise in both technological and administrative areas. He oversaw maintenance and repair of engines and cars, and monitored equipment performance, designing refinements if necessary.
