Biographical/Historical note

C. E. Perkins was intimately involved in the organization and expansion of the Burlington & Missouri River Roads. He served as assistant treasurer, land agent, and eventually general superintendent of the B&MRR, Iowa and in 1872 he was named vice-president of the B&MRR in Nebraska. As vice-president, he oversaw conflicts with pooling in Iowa between various lines, and difficult negotiations with the CB&Q over pools and interchange at the Missouri River. He concurrently held the positions of general manager of the CB&Q and vice-president of the B&MRR, Nebraska during the 1870s. In 1880 the lines consolidated amidst fierce competition from other lines for freight revenue, and in 1881 he was made president of the CB&Q. This series contains incoming and outgoing correspondence from the years he was vice-president of the B&MRR, Nebraska. The incoming correspondence is especially detailed on all aspects of the operation and expansion of the company.
