Scope and Content of the Collection

From the Record Group:

422 payroll books, organized alphabetically by division. Some division books contain payroll information for a variety of departments, others are dedicated to a particular job or department within that division. Information generally includes name, type of job, and compensation information. Most books are marked with old volume numbers; this information was discarded in favor of a new system based on the current division arrangement.

In 1976, researcher Paul V. Black compiled computerized lists which cross-reference the payroll books according to date, occupation, and original volume number. There is also a "Detailed Payroll Analysis," which includes information about the frequency of various divisions and departments,

This finding aid describes additions to the original deposit of records inventoried in the Guide to the Burlington Archives in the Newberry Library, 1851-1901 (Chicago: Newberry Library, 1949).
