 File — Box: 1, Folder: 1

Scope and Contents note

From the Series:

Materials related to the lives and careers of Wright and Zoe Howes, including the bookselling business they ran together for 45 years, Wright Howes' military service in World War I, and his work compiling the bibliographical U.S.IANA. Howes did not see combat during his WWI service, but his letters to Zoe Howes describe camp life, France at the time of the Armistice, and his thoughts about the war and not being able to fight. There is also extensive business correspondence, both original and photocopied, between Wright Howes and his various customers, photocopies of Everett Graff's reports of his trips with Wright Howes, and detailed information about the conception and publication of each edition of U.S.IANA. Also included are reminiscences from a neighbor who lived near the Howeses in the Irving Apartments, a few letters detailing the Howeses' retirement-era lives in Augusta, GA, Zoe Howes' collection of Victorian greeting cards, and a variety of ephemeral material found with the Howes' estate.
