Magic and Magicians
Scope and Content of the Collection
This is a collection of letterheads and stationery issued from approximately 1861 to approximately 2013. The bulk of material were issued between approximately 1915 and approximately 2000.
The collection consists of single sheet letterheads, envelopes, stationery packets, and advertising materials originally issued by hotels, businesses, organizations, and performers. Businesses and organizations include air and railway corporations, banks, advertising companies, publishers, booksellers, paper manufacturers, magic shops, manufacturers of magic apparatuses, and fraternal organizations and clubs or societies. A significant amount of these are magic organizations and societies. Letterheads issued by performers advertise magicians, jugglers, ventriloquists, psychics, comedians, and musicians. The collection includes one example of stationery engraved by Waters-Son during the American Civil War as well as a packet of military-theme stationery issued during World War I. Geographic ranges of companies and individuals include the United States, Great Britain, Ireland, continental Europe, Canada, Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania.
Aside from letterheads and stationery, the collection also includes hotel advertisements, receipt forms, telegram and fax forms, and paper samples printed as stationery.
