"The Spirit of '76"; "The Spirit of '76," Anon., 1923
Scope and Contents note
The dance and sheet music series includes materials related to Evelyn Zwiefka's, Grace Zwiefka Thuis's, and Diane Lewandowski's dance and physical education instruction as well as specialty sheet music. The series contains two subseries: “Dances” and “Sheet Music.”
The “Dances” subseries contains dance notations and accompanying sheet music. The dance notations may appear on a separate sheet(s) and/or handwritten on the sheet music itself. The folder titles for the dances read as such: “Dance Title”; “Musical Score,” Composer. When a dance title is unknown it appears as: “___.” The dates in the “Dances” subseries reflect the copyright date/publication date on the sheet music.
The “Sheet Music” subseries includes: an autographed score; sheet music issued by Louis H. Chalif of the Louis H. Chalif Normal School of Dancing in New York, New York, from the early twentieth-century, and owned/used by Beulah E. Muehlhausen; additional from Muehlhausen; Polish sheet music; and a score published by a Chicago company. The Polish sheet music contains some published by W.H. Sajewski in Chicago, as well as a book owned and possibly made by Kathy Zawodzki titled “Polish Songs and Poems.” Additionally, some of the Polish sheet music came from Poland and there are inscriptions in Polish on them.
