Scope and Content of the Collection

From the Collection:

Programs issued for the annual Normal School and Convention of the CNADM, held every summer in a Chicago venue. Early Directories include list of board of directors, members, attendees, committees, dance notation taught, photographs of board, faculty, and occasionally group pictures of the previous year’s convention attendees. Then the Directories (and Prospectuses, later called Programs, containing faculty biographies and advertisements) were divided from the dance notation books. Names varied, but generally there were 1- or 2-week sessions, workshops, and the actual convention held every summer. The organization began videotaping and making available workshop footage starting in 1992. Beginning in 2014, the Dance Notes were made available electronically.

Some program books were culled from other Newberry dance collections: Kehl School of Dance, Zwiefka, Adele Artinian (The studio in Milwaukee where Ann Barzel taught classes), Joyce Lang. Some include inserts and annotations from the previous owners.

See also Ann Barzel Dance Research collection for programs, brochures, clippings, newsletters, and some administrative material.
