Series 4: Scrapbooks, 1966-1973

 Series

  • Staff Only

Scope and Contents note

This series consists of two unbound scrapbooks that were created by the Indian Council Fire organization and original order was maintained. Some material is pasted on the paper, other material was inserted into pockets pasted on the page, or simply placed between pages. Each folder has an approximate date range, but some items are undated.

The materials placed in the scrapbooks include (but are not limited to) correspondence, organization-wide announcements, memoranda, board meeting agendas, completed membership applications, lists of members, biographical sketches for some annual dinner award winners, photographs, newspaper clippings, greeting cards, postcards (sent and unsent), ephemera from events and venues (hotel brochures/menus, name tags, buttons), materials concerning other organizations (membership brochures, event programs), and periodicals and newsletters.

Incoming correspondence from members often concerns membership and attendance of events. Other correspondence is between ICF officials, such as President Marie LaFrinierre, and political figures, such as U.S. Senate members and governors; major discussion topics include the Indian Council Fire’s support for bills concerning Native American rights and welfare, and many members’ concern about the replacement of Robert L. Bennett as Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Correspondence between ICF officials and representatives of broadcasting companies often concerns the representation of Native Americans in television and other media. Newspaper clippings describe current events and feature prominent members of the ICF and/or Award Winners; several clippings feature representations of Native Americans in newspaper comics. Many photos depict events or individuals attending events, such as the Award Dinner and other events hosted by related organizations. Other organizations hosting events, publishing newsletters, and corresponding with members of the ICF include (but are not limited to) the National Congress of American Indians, the Association of Indian Affairs, and the American Indian Center of Chicago.
