Scope and Contents note

Materials collected by Doris Humphrey’s mother, Julia Ellen Humphrey (née Wells), who accompanied her daughter on the Denishawn Dancers tour aboard with Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn. The tour took place between 1925 and 1926. The series chiefly contains postcards and photographs from and of Japan, China, India, Ceylon (today known as Sri Lanka), the Philippines, Burma (today known as Myanmar), and more. The majority of the photographs and some of the postcards have notations on them. There are also some postcards from Doris Humphrey to her mother.

Conditions Governing Access

The Doris Humphrey Society Records are open for research in the Special Collections Reading Room; 1 box at a time (Priority III).

Audiovisual recordings in this collection have not been digitized and are unavailable for use at this time.

Arrangement note

Arranged alphabetically by material type. The photographs are arranged alphabetically by their title, which does mean that the colonial places names are sometimes reflected in the titles. The postcards are at the end of the series and arranged alphabetically by country (not the colonial name), with the countries in continental Asia appearing first. The postcards are then arranged by title, which like the photographs means that the colonial place names are sometimes reflected in the titles. Current and preferred names for places are provided in addition to the ones found on the items.
