My grandfather, Sylvester Allen Ballou, sailed around Cape Horn to settle in the gold fields of El Dorado County, CA, in 1850. His wit and geniality in his intelligent leadership of popular debates as well as letters to the newspapers, won him the election to the California Assembly in 1854.
