Gately, Joan - Change and Continuity, December 5, 2001

 File — Box: 13
Identifier: 1

Paper description

Describes the history of the Wausaukee Club of Wisconsin since its founding in 1889, as well as the author’s 50 years as a member of the Gately family (a five generation club family). Rail transportation made the wilderness accessible. The hunting lodge was a male paradise for a group of Chicago’s North Shore friends until the later 1890s. Over time the Indians disappeared and the wilderness was tamed by the automobile, electricity, and plumbing. The club has survived world wars, Prohibition, and the 1960s and 1970s, and many changes through the generations: in fashion, habits, summer routines, games played.
