Journalist and professor at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism who wrote one of the definitive textbooks of American journalism. An activist in civic affairs, McDougall ran for Congress as a Democrat in Illinois' 10th District, for the U.S. Senate as a Progressive Party candidate, and as a Peace Party candidate for the 13th Congressional District. His papers include correspondence, subject files concerning his many interests and activities, photographs, etc. Additions include correspondence, published articles, typescript copies of a draft work titled "Spilling the Beans", items regarding his genealogical interest in the MacDougall clan, a large body of clippings and correspondence relating to his teaching and publications, his books and publications of the Illinois Writer's Project, 113 pamphlets (1933-1985) on various aspects of free speech and civil rights, including CD copies of MacDougall’s “Rambling Reminiscences” recorded in 1985 (12 discs), and 15 additional CDs of the MacDougall memorial at Kendall College, Nov. 30, 1985 and various interviews and talks given by or about him from 1970 to 1989. Also paper copies of correspondence with Emil Dansker, a press release re MacDougall’s award from the American Society of Journalism School Administrators (no date), a 1971 newspaper article by MacDougall, and a printed book announcement for Superstition and the Press.
