Scope and Contents note

From the Sub-Series:

Lawrence S. Fanning was executive editor at the Chicago Sun-Times and later editor at the Chicago Daily News during the 1960s. Files contain correspondence with reporters and foreign correspondents, clippings, and other materials and reflect the personal connection he had with his staff, and his devotion to the Daily News. Much of the material deals with Fanning's controversial departure from the paper after the death of Marshall Field IV. Personal files contain biographical information and correspondence with family members and friends. After leaving Field Enterprises, Fanning married Katherine Woodruff, the former wife of Marshall Field and moved to Alaska where they worked together at the Anchorage Daily News. He died tragically of a heart attack at his desk at the paper in 1971.
