From the Series: Primarily correspondence between Fairbank family members Nathaniel Kellogg Fairbank, his wife Helen Graham, and their children Kellogg, Dexter, Helen, Margaret, Livingston, Nathalie, and Wallace. In early letters from Nathaniel Kellogg Fairbank to his wife-to-be Helen Beeckman, he describes Chicago during the mid 1860s, his business struggles as the fortunes of lard go up and down, and the strain he endures to keep ahead of the market. In convincing Helen that she will be happy in Chicago, he describes the opera, the weather, and the house he has purchased for them. He also notes social outings with other Chicago businessmen such as Hubbard and Van Buren. Correspondence between the Fairbank siblings and parents discuss European trips, school, socializing, and portray a spirited and loving family life. The series also contains a diary kept by Helen G. Fairbank in 1879, some personal materials, and a few papers relating to the financial assets and estate of Nathaniel Kellogg Fairbank.
