Series 2: Correspondence from Readers, 1951-1986

 Series

  • Staff Only

Scope and Contents note

Contains letters written to Harris by his readers. Correspondents range from admiring to extreme, from serious criticism from businesses and professionals to religious fanatics, prisoners, the mentally unstable, and lonely people looking for guidance in their lives. Letters are often accompanied by materials from readers such as religious tracts and newsletters from organizations. In 1977 Harris published a controversial column about the authorship of the bible which generated an impassioned reaction from readers. Harris composed the "Gospel Memo" in response and offered it to all who requested it, thus this series also contains numerous of these requests.
