Scope and Content of the Collection

Small group of letters regarding Theodore Thomas, founding conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which were collected by Philip Hart, music historian and former CSO assistant manager. Hart, while penning a biography of conductor Fritz Reiner, was also thinking about writing about Thomas. Much of the correspondence is between Hart and Theodora Schultze, Chairman of The National Committee to Preserve Felsengarten, Thomas’s summer home. Other correspondents are Ezra Schabas, who wrote a biography of Thomas, Irving Lowens, and CSO Board Chairman Louis Sudler. Also, a copy of an inventory of Thomas’s library at Felsengarten, and a photograph of a statue of Thomas.
