Typescripts, drafts, manuscript research notes, and some printed copies of novels, poems, short stories, and essays. Smith wrote predominantly for children and young adults, and the works include rhyming poems about animals, adventure stories, and historic and biographical works about American Indians, figures in American history (generals, soldiers, patriots, etc.), and authors. The Fire Dragon is an historical account of the Chicago Fire of 1871. Many of the works were unpublished.
