Scope and Contents note

From the Series:

The Publishing Series, measuring about 30 linear feet, comprises the largest series in the collection and details Rand McNally's output from 1859-1995. It is divided into eight subseries: Cartographic; Financial; General; Job Printing; Juvenile; Manufacturing Processes; Periodical; and Printing Ephemera. The Cartographic subseries spans from the 1890s to the 1980s. Cartographic Publishing is further classified into the following categories: Administration; Atlases; Awards; General; Globes; Guides; History; and Maps. Financial Publishing (1950-1980) consists of only five folders and includes information on the Business Directory, the Banker's Directory, and the Financial Systems Division. The General Publishing subseries (1890s-1980s) includes materials which span two or more of the other subseries as well as other publishing materials which do not fall under the categories of any of the subseries. The Job Printing subseries (1859-1970) is the largest in the Publishing Series. Job Printing is further broken down into the categories of Administration, Products, and Tickets. The Product category includes brochures and time-tables printed for various railroads from 1870-1967 (bulk 1870-1900). The tickets are largely airline and railroad, but there is one box (1/2 linear ft) of non-transport tickets. The Juvenile Publishing Series (1904-1981) is about 4 linear feet and includes materials on administration, original artwork and production, author and title information, marketing, reviews and clippings, and two sales sample books. The Manufacturing Processes subseries measures 2 linear feet and includes press work records, sample logos for maps and guides, a specification book, and type specimen books. Periodical Publishing is a very small subseries consisting of only five folders covering its history, and juvenile and general periodical publications. Finally, the Printing Ephemera subseries (1890s-1980s) measures ½ linear foot and includes Christmas cards produces annually for use by Rand McNally, various in-house publications and some miscellaneous pieces which do not fall into any particular category.
