Scope and Contents note

From the Series:

The Photographic series (1860-1985) spans 6.4 linear feet and includes photographs, photographic negatives, 35mm slides, glass lantern slides, and a number of oversize photographs. Along with photographs of various facilities the company occupied during this time, are many which depict personnel engaged in production processes for printing and publishing, in particular cartographic and book publishing. In a related production vein, there are many photographs of book illustrations, authors and artists, and some photos of events relating to works published by the company. There is about one linear foot of photographs of Rand McNally personnel, many of which are unlabeled and unidentified, and some of which are from conferences, parties, and various company social functions. There are also several linear feet of scrapbooks (including some oversize) of facilities, manufacturing processes, publishing, and miscellaneous subjects. Included as a separate division within the series is the Carl Mapes Collection, which comes from Dr. Mapes' own materials collected as a prominent cartographer at Rand McNally. This collection includes glass lantern slides of a variety of cartographic subjects.
