Scope and Contents note

From the Series:

The W.B. Conkey Co. series, at about 3 linear feet, documents some aspects of this publisher's history before it was purchased by Rand McNally in 1949 and incorporated as a division of the company. The Conkey Co. was a printing and publishing business successfully established in Chicago in the late nineteenth century, and which later moved to a new facility in Hammond, Indiana which became renowned for its new and innovative factory construction and architecture. Until it was incorporated into Rand McNally in 1949, the company was known for its skilled, high-quality publications and job printing work. Within the series there is information about both the Chicago and Hammond facilities, some documents dating from the nineteenth century, examples of printed products, production materials, a few artifacts, and some general historical information in the form of clippings, scrapbooks, and notes. Also included in the series is a photographic section, which spans about one linear foot and includes photographs of facilities, manufacturing processes, personnel, and printed products.
