Scope and Content of the Collection

Papers of bookplate artist Vytautas Virkau from approximately 1966 to approximately 2003. The bulk of materials are from 1975 to 1993. Materials consist of correspondence with other artists, international exhibition materials, ex libris examples, and periodicals relating to bookplates. Exhibition materials include medals received at the International Biennial Exhibition of Modern Exlibris held in Malbork, Poland. Materials also include a collection of bookplates by artist Zibuntas Miksys.

Biography of Vytautas Virkau

Vytautas Virkau was born in Šiauliai, Lithuania in 1930. He fled Lithuania in 1944, and from 1944 to 1946 studied at the Lithuanian Gymnasium in Munich, Germany. He moved to the United States in 1951. He attended the University of Chicago and earned an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1956. From 1961 to 1985 Virkau was a professor at George Williams College of Art in Downers Grove, Illinois. From 1986-1995 he was a professor at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois and Head of the Department of Fine Arts. In 1970 he became art editor and designer of the journal Metmenys. Virkau has designed over 400 bookplates for individuals and institutions.
