Scope and Content of the Collection

A collection of 31 items collected by Robert E. Wagner between approximately 1880 and approximately 1931. The bulk of materials were issued between 1894 and 1931.

Materials include personal items such as two photographs of Wagner by Walinger of Chicago and golf memorabilia in the form of a golf chit from Riverside Golf Club and a magazine or news clipping of Wagner holding a trophy. Most items relate to Wagner's Chicago printing company. Items associated with the business include letterheads, business cards, company announcements in the form of New Year cards, a copperplate for business card engraving, plant photographs featuring machinery and employees, and a manuscript printing seal proof designed by J. Manz Engraving Co. Some letterheads feature manuscript sketches for a printing plant built around 1931.

Biography of Robert E. Wagner

Robert E. Wagner was born in Ireland in 1869. In Chicago he worked for various printing companies before organizing the Calumet Book & Engraving Company in 1894. In 1899 the company changed names to Calumet Company and in 1901 it became Wagner Hanson & Company. The company specialized in large editions and catalog work.
