Biography of Maude Maury Lawrence

Illinois soprano, performer, and musician.

Maude Maury Lawrence was born in Nebraska around 1880 to Edwin T. and Flavilla Maury. She married William S. Lawrence in 1902 and lived in Galesburg, Illinois. She attended the Knox Conservatory of Music in 1912-1913. Little is known about her musical career except that she formed a traveling troupe, described as a “concert company,” that provided entertainment to military troops. They performed music and theater both in the continental United States and at the Panama Canal around 1920. A review states that, “Her brilliant array of beautiful costumes, her perfectly wonderful versatility in impersonations and reading, her singing voice of almost matchless smoothness and brilliance make her a headliner anywhere and always.”

Variant spellings of her names include Maud or Maude, Maury or Mary, and Laurence or Lawrence.
