Letters, genealogical information, and legal and financial documents of the Ames Family of Lake County, Illinois. Correspondence includes several letters from Joel W. Ames describing his experience as a Union Army solider during the Civil War. Also includes an 1864 draft notice for Roderick D. Ames and documents regarding his discharge in 1865.

Biography of Ames Family
Family from Lake County, Illinois.
Jonathan Carver Ames Jr. and Lucy Ames had seven children including Roderick D. Ames (1832-1914), Joel W. Ames (1839-1862), and Elijah E. Ames (1841-1921). During the Civil War, Joel W. Ames served in the 15th Illinois Infantry and died in the Battle of Shiloh on Apr. 6, 1862. Roderick D. Ames was drafted into the war on Nov. 17, 1864 to the 48th Illinois Infantry, and mustered out Aug. 15, 1865.
