Scope and Content of the Collection

Seven letters from Alfred Barnes to sister Julia Barnes which discuss family matters, including the courtship and marriage of Barnes' mother and the conflicted feelings brother and sister share on this matter. Also discussed are friends and other family, Julia's move to Indiana, and a new job Alfred Barnes has taken in New York. In one letter Alfred Barnes discusses Julia's move, and the safety of her travelling alone.

Biography of Alfred Barnes

Little is known about Alfred Barnes and his sister Julia. He writes from Hartford, Connecticut and his letters seem to be from a religious man who is very close to his sister, who lived in both Northampton, Massachusetts and Evansville, Indiana.
