History of the Cambrian Benevolent Society and the Hebron Welsh Westminster United Presbyterian Church

Chicago-area Welsh-American benevolent society.

The Cambrian Benevolent Society was founded in 1853 to support Welsh immigrants in Chicago. The Society relied on membership fees, concerts, picnics and other events to support the community. The Society continues to celebrate Welsh culture, heritage, and history through events and publications.

The collection also includes materials from the Hebron Welsh Westminster United Presbyterian Church (1844-1987). The church first met in cobbler William Davies’ home on Randolph Street in Chicago in 1844. After outgrowing two other locations, the then-Methodist congregation constructed a church at the corner of Adams Street and Francisco Avenue in 1902. In 1920, the congregation affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, and in 1956 it moved to 5916 W. Rice Street. At its dissolution in 1987, the church was based in Des Plaines, Illinois.
