Scope and Content of the Collection

Incoming and outgoing correspondence, mostly business and real estate related.

Most of the incoming letters are coming from attorneys, businessmen, realtors, and bankers, regarding stocks and real estate investments. Outgoing correspondence, except for one loose letter is compiled in a letterpress copybook which must have been part of a series, as it is labeled "No. 6." Letters from Edith C. Ewing are about securing personal loans from Adams so she can attend college in New York

Biography of J. McGregor Adams

Chicago businessman.

J. McGregor Adams (1834-1904) was born in Londonderry, New Hampshire, and educated at Andover. In 1858 he came to Chicago to represent a hardware company, and soon afterward became associated with John Crerar, with whom he established the firm of Crerar, Adams & Co. After the death of John Crerar Adams changed the name to Adams & Westlake Company.

Adams lived in Highland Park, Illinois, and passed away at his home on Sept. 17, 1904.

Abstract

Incoming and outgoing correspondence of Chicago businessman J. McGregor Adams, president of the Adams & Westlake Company, previously named Crerar, Adams & Co. Incoming correspondence (bulk 1901-1904) mostly concerns real estate matters; Outgoing correspondence are mainly in a letterpress copybook, for which only No. 6 (1890-1893) exists.
