Martinengo dalle Palle collection of Italian death notices
Collection
Identifier: Case Wing folio-CS764-.M37
Scope and Content of the Collection
Collection of 119 Italian death notices, primarily for members of the Martinengo family and other families of the Venetian nobility, collected by different members of the Martinengo dalle Palle family of Brescia and Venice throughout the 19th century. While most were printed in Venice, several were printed in Brescia or Padua. More than thirty different printers and presses are represented in the collection, especially Barozzi, Giuseppe Deyé, Joseph Kier, Giovanni Kirchmayr, Gaetano Longo, Giambattista Merlo, Pellegrini, and Ripamonti Carpano of Venice. Other printers include Giuseppe Antonelli, Corradini, G. Draghi, Melchiorre Fontana, Giuseppe Grimaldo, Rizzi, Tipografia del commercio, Tipografia Emiliana, Tipografia Gaspari, and Tiografia Santini in Venice; Bettoni e comp., Pio Istituto in San Barnaba, Francesco Speranza, and Tipografia Valotti in Brescia; and Pietro Prosperini in Padua.
The notices in the collection showcase the evolution of Italian printing from letterpress to lithography over the course of the 19th century. They show evidence of changes in printing techniques, materials, and styles, from Neoclassical to Romantic. Some earlier notices are illustrated with woodcuts and wood engravings, while many notices in the collection are illustrated with lithographic vignettes and decorative borders. Some printers made use of different paper stocks and colors, including coated, blue, pink, and black papers, and metallic gold and silver inks.
Some of the death notices are addressed in manuscript to members of the Martinengo dalle Palle family at their palace at San Marcuola in Venice, especially Count Venceslao and Countess Maria Elena Memmo Martinengo dalle Palle. Some of these have been folded, postmarked, and mailed to the count and countess.
