Scope and Content of the Collection

Clippings, programs and publicity material concerning the career of concert baritone, choral conductor and teacher Theodore Harrison. Also, items concerning the Hull-House School of Music in Chicago, as well as two 1947 phonodisc recordings of the Hull-House Chorus. Collection contains some programs and clippings about baritone Barre Hill, who sang several seasons with the Chicago Civic Opera Company and who achieved considerable success as a soloist while still in his twenties. There are also a few items relating to soprano Nancy Carr, a popular local artist who appeared on the Chicago Theatre of the Air.

Biography of Theodore Harrison

Chicago singer, teacher, and choral conductor.

Born in 1876, Theodore Harrison was a concert baritone as well as faculty member at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, conductor of the Adult Chorus of the Hull-House Music School and director of the choir at First Congregational Church of Evanston, Illinois. Prior to joining the Conservatory faculty, Harrison sang widely at home and abroad. During World War I, he was commissioned by the government to help popularize tunes like "Over There" among men in army training camps.

Harrison was married to Donna Esselstyn, voice teacher and accompanist. He died in 1965.
