Biography of Sol Malkoff

Calligrapher and designer. Born in Chicago in 1918, Sol Malkoff worked as a linotype operator, then trained at the School of the Art Institute. He studied with the Newberry Library Calligraphy Study Group and worked for the Rand McNally & Co. before leaving Chicago in 1947. He made his subsequent career largely in Atlanta (as principal of Typography Shop) and in New York (at Gould Typographers). From 1952 to 1985 he published several articles on calligraphy, handwriting, and typography. After moving to Florida in 1979, he worked for various commercial printers and taught design and calligraphy in Florida and Georgia. He died on January 17, 2001.

Catalogs and advertising pieces designed by Malkoff in the employ of the Rand McNally Co. (1945-1947) may be found in the Rand McNally and Company Records at the Newberry (Wing Modern MS Rand). In 1999 the Malkoff family donated books and papers on typography to the University of Central Florida where they form the Sol & Sadie Malkoff Book Arts Collection, on which see http://library.ucf.edu.
