The German-born Ziehn taught such notables as Grace Chadbourne and John Alden Carpenter and also wrote textbooks on harmony and composition; he was known for his original and unorthodox musical views. Music includes Ziehn's own works in addition to works of other composers, often with Ziehn's manuscript notes. Correspondence includes letters regarding Ziehn from Julius Gold to Mrs. Albert Heller, a former pupil of Ziehn, and other secondary correspondence regarding Ziehn, in addition to his own correspondence.
