Varney Family Papers
Scope and Contents
Twenty-six deeds, receipts, and other documents pertaining to the Varney family’s land holdings in Penobscot County, Maine. Most of the deeds and documents deal with land bought and sold by Hatherly Varney, who died around 1851. Documents dated 1851-1852 cover his estate, including the appointment of his widow Lydia as administrator of the estate and its division among Lydia and Hatherly’s three children and heirs, Gorham C., Grandville S., and Genevia Varney. Also includes deeds of other Varneys (including Ebenezer and Samuel); the last will and testament of John W. Smith of Freedom, Maine, grandfather to Gorham and Grandville, dated 1846; and a receipt dated 1847 from the Penobscot Mutual Fire Insurance Company to Hatherly Varney.
