Ethel M. Roe Scrapbook

 Collection
Identifier: Midwest-MS-143

Scope and Contents

Scrapbook of Ethel M. Roe beginning with her music studies at Mount Carroll Seminary (now Shimer College) and containing concert and theater programs, mainly from New York City, newspaper clippings, tickets, and other ephemera. Among the ephemera from Roe’s time at the seminary are programs for concerts of the Cecelia Society and commencement exercises. She graduated from the music conservatory at Mount Carroll in 1888 with a specialization in Advanced Piano and Harmony. By December of that year, Roe was a pupil of Miss I.B. Decker of Miss Gordon’s School for Girls in Philadelphia and was listed as a performer in programs for the school. A majority of the scrapbook includes concert and theater programs, many of them annotated by Roe, from New York City, as well as a few from Boston and Philadelphia. Scattered throughout are Baptist church programs and announcements for religious lectures, suggesting that Roe was likely a Baptist. Several programs and clippings mention William H. Sherwood, founder of the Sherwood Conservatory in Chicago. Compiled in a blank "Mark Twain’s scrap book" with pages that can be moistened to activate adhesive for affixing items.
