Business and legal documents dealing with Henry Flentye’s property purchases and transactions in Chicago, Northfield, and Jefferson (later Jefferson Park), Illinois. Flentye purchased several lots from the Newberry addition to Chicago. Materials include agreements, deeds, tax records, and architectural plans for a country villa home. Some documents are reproductions, and tax records after Henry Flentye’s death in 1891 are addressed to his wife, Sophia.

Biography of Henry Flentye

White, German-American business and property owner.

Henry Flentye was born in Germany in 1829. He emigrated to America around 1846, settling in Chicago. Flentye acquired property in the Chicago area and owned a tailoring and clothing business at Wells and Kinzie streets in Chicago. He married Sophia Justina Lissette Franke (1835-1923) in Chicago in 1852. A Chicago Tribune article titled “Found Relief in Death: Henry Flentye Kills Himself on Account of a Tumor” published on August 22, 1891 indicates Flentye died by suicide.
