Biography of Julia W. Doane

Julia W. Doane was born in 1859 in Illinois, the daughter of J. W. (John Wesley) Doane and Julia A. Doane. Her father served as the President of Merchant’s Loan and Trust Company for many years and owned J. W. Doane & Co., a large importer of coffee and tea, with offices in Chicago, New York, London, and Rio de Janeiro.

Doane traveled a lot throughout her life and documented parts of those excursions in her autograph album and scrapbook. She collected signatures from her family, friends, and acquaintances, and chronicled some of their lives on stage in her scrapbook.

In 1910, Doane and her husband, George E. Dresser purchased a property adjacent to her sister’s, Fannie Doane Erhardt, in Riverton, Vermont. She stayed in the cottage there until the mid-1930s and died ca. 1936-1937.
