Scope and Content of the Collection

This collection includes 31 playscripts written 26 contemporary playwrights working in Chicago. Some folders contain playwright biographies.

Scott T. Barsotti is a Chicago-based playwright and performer hailing from Pittsburgh, PA. His work is inspired by the horror genre.

Mark Chrisler is a fringe playwright at the Found Objects Theatre Group who has written over ten full-length and solo plays as well as nearly 100 short plays. He was named Best Emerging Playwright of 2010 by the Chicago Reader.

Randall Colburn received his MFA in playwriting from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and is a member of Chicago’s Live Lit scene. He is a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists.

Jenny Connell is a playwright, performer, and teacher who has performed in theaters throughout Chicago and Austin. She attended UT Austin’s MFA Playwriting program as well as the School at Steppenwolf and is a Core Member of The Playwrights Center.

John Conroy is a playwright, investigator, and journalist whose 2012 play My Kind of Town was deemed a “masterpiece” by Rolling Stone. He is an adjunct professor at the DePaul University College of Law.

Philip Dawkins is an Artistic Associate of About Face Theatre, an Ensemble Playwright at Victory Gardens, and a founding member of Chicago Opera Vanguard. He teaches playwriting at Northwestern University.

Will Dunne is an author, playwright, and teacher as well as a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists where he develops plays and teaches classes. His play The Roper received a Chicago Jeff Award nomination for Best New Work.

Mike Ervin is a writer and disability rights activist who received a 2001 playwright fellowship from the Illinois Arts Council.

Marsha Estell is a resident playwright at Chicago Dramatists whose play The Heat was nominated for a Jeff Award for Outstanding New Work.

Michael Sidney Fosberg has been preforming his autobiographical solo-show Incognito since 2001. He has performed at The Steppenwolf Theatre and the Goodman Theatre and co-founded the Huron Theater Ensemble.

Maureen Gallagher attended the Goodman School of Drama, where she continues to perform. She is a four-time Jeff Award nominee and a member of the Dramatists Guild.

David Scott Gallagher is a Chicago playwright and screenwriter who co-founded the Chicago theatre company Visions & Voices.

Andrew Hinderaker is a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists and a three-time Jeff Award Nominee. He received his MFA in Playwriting from UT Austin.

Hope Hommersand is a Chicago playwright who belongs to the Dramatists Guild of America and the Network Playwrights at Chicago Dramatists.

Neil Labute is a film director, screenwriter, and playwright. LaBute’s plays including In the Company of Men and The Shape of Things hinge on themes of gender relations and political correctness.

M.E.H. Lewis is an award-winning Chicago playwright and member of the Dramatists Guild and the Women’s Theatre Alliance.

Tekki Lomnicki is a performer, playwright, director, and educator who co- founded Tellin’ Tales Theatre in 1995. Tekki performs solo work for schools, conferences, and theaters across the US and Canada.

Martyna Majok is a Polish-American playwright whose work has been developed at The Steppenwolf Theatre, Ensemble Studio Theatre, The John F. Kennedy Center, and many others.

Rohina Malik is a playwright and solo performance artist. Born in London of South Asian Heritage, Malik is a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists whose work has been developed at the Goodman Theatre, Victory Gardens Theatre, Crossroads Theater, and many others.

Ronan Marra is a Chicago-based director and playwright who co-founded the Signal Ensemble Theatre.

Jon Steinhagen is a playwright, author, composer, and actor in Chicago who has won four of seven Jeff Award nominations. Carlos Murillo is an award-winning playwright is Head of Playwriting at Theatre School at DePaul University.

James Sherman has a 30-year playwriting career in Chicago and currently teaches dramatic writing and playwriting at Columbia College and the Theatre School at DePaul University.

Biography of Todd Bauer

Todd Bauer is a Chicago-based playwright, director, and lecturer. Bauer received his MA in liberal studies from Northwestern University and has taught British and American drama at the Newberry Library since 2002. Bauer’s first production, The Birdfeeder Doesn’t Know, premiered at the Raven Theatre in the spring of 2015.

This collection of playscripts comes from Bauer’s seminar at the Newberry Library, “Chicago Playwrights and Their Plays,” which offers participants the opportunity to meet a Chicago playwright each week and engage in a dialog about their completed work or work in progress.
