Temperance pledge collection
Collection
Identifier: Midwest-MS-Temperance
Scope and Content of the Collection
Collection of temperance pledge certificates issued by churches, temperance societies, and other organizations roughly from the mid-19th century until the mid-20th century in the United States and abroad.
The collection consists primarily of individual pledges but, in some cases, collective pledges are also included, usually in the context of a family or a church setting. Most of the organizations included only have a few materials that do not span succeeding decades, but other organizations like Band of Hope, National Christian Temperance Union, Blue Ribbon, Loyal Temperance Legion, and Woman’s Christian Temperance Union have material spanning multiple decades. Miscellaneous pledges are ones for which no formal organization was discernible.
