Biography of Edward Herbert Thompson

Edward Herbert Thomson (1860-1935) was an American archeologist from Worcester, Massachusetts who spent much of his career studying Maya civilization. In 1885, Thompson was appointed U.S. consul at Merida, Yucatán, Mexico, where he lived closely with the Mayas, learning their language and cultural traditions. Thompson published numerous papers, including an 1879 piece in Popular Science Monthly that suggested Maya civilization may have originated on the lost continent of Atlantis. Two of Thompson's 1898 publications can be found in the collections of the Newberry.
