James Dunwoody collection of travel postcards

Identifier: Modern-MS-Dunwoody

Scope and Content of the Collection

Ephemera, mostly postcards and viewbooks, collected by James Dunwoody.

About two thirds of the postcards and viewbooks are from destinations in the United States, with a large concentration from New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, and California. The international postcards span several dozen countries, but those from Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland are the most numerous. Many of the postcards are both blank and undated, although some contain written correspondence and postmarking. Of note are postcards from national parks and similar destinations including Yellowstone, Niagara Falls, and the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Also included are postcards commemorating large events such as the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana and World’s Fairs in Chicago, New York, and Seattle. Many of the domestic postcards advertise restaurants, hotels (mostly Holiday Inns), various cruises, and airlines.

The collection also includes a small number of greeting cards and trade cards, mostly blank and undated. Also included with the miscellaneous ephemera is a book of World War II ration stamps.

3 Linear Feet (3 record cartons)

Collection of domestic and international postcards and a small amount of other ephemera including trade cards, greeting cards, and viewbooks.

The collection is arranged by material with postcards and viewbooks first, followed by greeting cards, trade cards, and miscellaneous ephemera. The postcards are organized into domestic (originating from within the fifty states of the U.S.A) and international. Domestic postcards appear first in the collection and are arranged alphabetically by state. International post cards follow, arranged alphabetically by county. Island nations and territories such as Puerto Rico, Curacao, and the Virgin Islands which are or have been part of larger political entities appear separately in their own folders. The United Kingdom is also divided into separate folders for Wales, Ireland, and England. Post cards from Canada are sorted alphabetically by province and territory.
