The series contains some of the earliest letters written by Perkins in the collection. The letterpress books contain letters regarding routine railroad business and also the time during the 1870s when financier Jay Gould and Perkins battled over control of lines and pooling in Iowa and Nebraska. This material consists of letterpress books containing correspondence to various railroad officers and associates. The term “Private” here refers to a letter that should be delivered directly to the addressee rather than opened by a secretary or assistant. Most letters have to do with financial matters, stocks, bonds, taxes, etc. Many concern Perkins’ personal finances and vacations.
